Thankfulness

Recently, I've been so thankful for my jobs and how perfectly they have provided for our needs all the while being as minimal as possible. I was calculating just how many hours a week I'm actually teaching (the P.E. job) and it comes out to a grand total of 8.5 hours. And I'm getting 50% of a 7 year teacher's salary?!?! Wow, that added a whole new perspective for me! God is SO good! (I just need to remember this when I'm pulling my hair out during some of my tough classes!)

Then, just a week or so ago, I was praying super hard about our lack of health insurance beginning March 1st. We'd had several very depressing conversations with insurance brokers and it wasn't looking good at all. In a random (?) conversation with a teacher I'd never seen before but happen to work near, I was encouraged to talk to our Assistant Superintendent of HR. I knew this lady to be very kind, but was sure it would be a lost cause because my HR rep told me when I signed my contract that part time employees didn't get benefits. However, believing that with God all things are possible... I went in person to plead my case. The result? Apparently 50% employees are to receive 50% benefits!! She apologized for the mix-up and promised to make good on all those months I was supposed to have gotten 50% coverage. Rudy and I couldn't have been more shocked! So instead of paying over 1,500/month we'll be paying just under 800/month. And while that still feels like a ton, we're thankful for the chance to maintain coverage at a 50% discount! And we're so glad Kyle will be able to maintain continuity with his pediatrician and specialist. Hooray!!!

Another thing I'm grateful for is that I work for such a positive, supportive school district. I've been pink slipped in two different districts and let me tell you, they couldn't have been more different in their approach. I'm so thankful I switched (even though it reduced my seniority to almost nothing!) and that they were kind enough to call me back! And twice now, while my job security is on the line ... they've sent me on an all-expense paid conference trip! I don't understand where the money comes from unless is it specifically allocated for such a use, but I sure love it and am thankful! So speaking of which, my other P.E. colleague and I just got back from a trip to San Francisco! We flew up Friday and came home Saturday night. We had a blast driving through SF and stayed at a beautiful hotel. We really enjoyed the workshop and learned a ton about early childhood development/brain growth and gross motor skills (to summarize). A funny story - In the past, I've dressed down for conferences because I always wore heals and professional attire while teaching and enjoyed the chance to go casual. I figured, if I had to sit all day and listen to someone present, I might as well be comfortable. Well, I'm always among the most casual and this time I wanted to look a little more grown up (or maybe I'm tired of looking like a slob for P.E. work?). So imagine my surprise when I walk in to this P.E. workshop and all I see are warm-ups and Jane Fonda-like attire! I'm not kidding, there were some older women there who we wearing outfits from the 80's for sure! :) And, to stand out even further, I realize that we're not going to be sitting behind a table/desk the whole day, but instead be jumping/running/skipping/hopping/obstacle-coursing around and I'm wearing flats that keep slipping on the gym floor! I realized then and there that I've yet to "transform" into a real P.E. teacher. Next time, I'll be wiser! :) Anyway, we got all fired up about what we learned and are excited for our first day back with the kids. I still have quite a bit left in my school budget for supplies, so I can't wait to place my order for some really cool things.

So all in all, I'm feeling grateful. And I'm going to hold on to that while we weather another storm of uncertainty regarding next year. There's talk of our district closing a school, and if that is done I will lose my job again. We will not worry though, because our God has proven himself faithful and gave us exactly what we needed this year. Who am I to doubt him regarding the next?

Happy 18 months, Kyle Dakota!

Last Saturday Kyle turned one and a half! I thought I'd journal about what he's into lately.

Kyle loves to, "Go, go go!" His favorite places are the "raj" with Papa and "Mimi's" (Grammie's) house. He lights up like a firefly when either place is mentioned let alone visited. Kyle is a big "helper" and loves to do anything we are doing. He intently watches everything we do and likes to show us repeatedly, I mean repeatedly that he knows how to do such and such. He absolutely loves to imitate Papa and then report back to us just exactly what Papa did. Everything that Papa has touched, be it a lamp that was fixed, or a toy made/repaired, to something that Papa owns or always does, results in Kyle pointing emphatically and exclaiming, "Papa!" as if he's so proud of his dad. :)

Kyle is a climber. There really isn't anything he can't climb onto. His latest (probably about a month or two ago) conquests are his changing table, high chair, our desk, and any chair, bed, etc. There isn't anything safe and he keeps us all on our toes. He's got such upper body strength as evidenced by this short video...

We love that our little man is such an adventurer and seemingly unafraid of anything (except really loud machine-type noises) and yet is so, so very gentle in spirit. He is quite a lover and gives tons of hugs and kisses. We are really proud of the fact that he seems (to us) to be really bright. Most amazing (again, to us) are the 2 to 3 step associations he constantly makes. Everywhere we go, all day long, he loves to point out everything he knows and connect it to a person or experience he's had. We marvel at the connections he makes to things we've said or done and are so proud of all the learning that's going on inside his little head!

Here are some of Kyle's favorites:
Number: 8 (loves to point out and say "eight" with a big smile)
Color: blue (he prefers the blue marker at least! :)
Friend: Nick and Will (brothers down the street he sees often)
Book: llama llama red pajama by Anna Dewdney
Songs to sing along to: E-I-E-I-O and Bob Marley's "Rebel Music" (similar, wouldn't ya say?)
Object/activity: keys, locks, or any hole to put a key in
Indoor activities: coloring, playing with his cars, getting the mail at his cardboard house, imitating Papa, helping Mommy in the kitchen, reading, and climbing.
Outdoor activities: working with his play tools in the garage with dad, getting the real mail, driving/pushing his wheels, going to Papa's truck to play, bike riding, playing at the park, digging in the sand at the beach.
Anywhere activity: peek-a-boo
Movie: Baby Signing Time videos and a sing-a-long song video at Mimi's house.
Music: reggae, and anything with a good beat he can bounce to
Treat: cookie (pronounced "kee-ko")
Handedness: left

Kyle's favorites in picture form:
The cardboard house with a mail/key box and a couple of peek a boo windows on the sides.
Kyle's house made out of a door Ru cut to K's size. Ru set out to find a used door and came back with one 15 minutes later. He's amazing. After a little bit, Kyle had his own house, Apt. #24 1/2, inside the raj, with a door that latches and has its own keys so he can lock it! (we have a spare and the roof isn't fully enclosed) He opens/closes it repeatedly, knocks, and enthusiastically comes out to greet us!
Have to showcase some more of Ru's creativity with this homemade t-ball stand. Kyle loves the smaller one GG brought for him (it makes noise) but is also very, very proud of his Papa's creation, made out of PVC, some gasket repair rubber, and other hardware.
Favorites toys: Matchbox car garage and the vintage Fisher Price Little People Parking Garage. Ru had such good memories of it and said Kyle had to have the original so he found it on eBay with the cars and little people too!

He's saying, "Mommy!" which means, "Here's your car. Play with us!"
Grammie's house and the "Kyle corner." This desk used to be mine when I was little. I begged my parents to save it for my future children... and now it finally gets used! :) Kyle loves it! Thanks Mom and Dad for storing it all these years.
A tentative look most people see...
...and the big smile he saves for us! :)
Kyle loves to color and generously offers to share (or insists we do it with him!).
Kyle and his best buddy, Nick. It's too cute. They have a great time together and after we part, Kyle calls for Nick repeatedly. If we tell him we're going to Nick's house, he gets super excited and starts to run. We love having dinners with this family because the adults get to enjoy their meal together while the kids entertain themselves in bliss. It definitely brings to mind the advantages for having a sibling for Kyle! ;) Interestingly, this picture shows Kyle looking bigger than Nick, but really Kyle is just "tall in the saddle" and Nick is actually taller than Kyle.
Keys + opening doors = timeless fun!!
Kyle pretend shaves (no blade here), lifts up his shirt to try to put deodorant on and walks around in Papa's shoes, to name a few things.
Boy does he love climbing up on the chair and typing/mousing around on the computer.
He loves the mouse and watching the cursor move over the screen.
Gio and the swing are still a huge hit.

And we were trying to summarize...!!! :)
Happy 18 months, Kyle! We couldn't be any more smitten with you!

Ru's last (full) semester begins...

I can feel it, we're both taking a deep breath right about now. The dreaded Sunday evening before the start of another busy semester. Tonight, when we put Kyle to bed, Ru explained to him what was going on and how this week would be much different from the previous weeks we've had while on break. Kyle really seemed to get it. He hugged Papa and answered him at all the right times and even got sad, noting the word "go" and the seriousness of his papa's voice. After I nursed him, he tried a few of his recent tricks to get me to bring him out into the living area. This time, he added "Papa" to the list. Somehow, Ru heard and the two shared another tender time before the lights went out. It was too adorable to describe properly.

A great deal of our excitement over this "last" semester has been snuffed out. (Is "snuffed" a word or am I typing too late at night?) It's too long and complicated to explain, but as a result of some circumstances that don't even relate to Rudy, sadly, he'll have one more class to take in the fall and won't be graduating this May after all. As disappointed as we are, we're trying to take it in stride and who knows, the program finally got approved to be a Doctorate, so maybe there'll be time now to squeeze in a few extra units to get that done sooner than we thought. Whatever the case, I'm proud of Rudy's attitude.

His 11 classes for this semester (for our journaling purposes) are:
  • Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy Lecture and Lab
  • Management of Geriatric Population Lecture and Lab
  • Management of Patients with Prosthetics and Orthotics Lecture and Lab
  • Management of Pediatric Population Lecture and Lab
  • Heath Care Issues II
  • Neurologic Clinical Decision Making
  • Pro Bono Outpatient Neurologic Clinic
Go Ru, Ru! Go Ru, Ru...

Summer in January

We've had beautiful, warm days lately. Although they are nice, we're still mentally feeling "winter" and 80 degrees doesn't say "winter" all that much, does it? Rudy's still off from school so he got to join us for our Monday beach trip. He surfed and taught Kyle some skills on the sand. Kyle was amazing. He's so fun, enjoys everything, and is a little light wherever he goes. He so desperately wanted to follow Rudy all the way into the water and got excited about "Papa" whenever a surfer got out of the water, thinking it was his dad. When his Papa finally did get out of the water, he ran to him as fast as his little legs could carry him. Our little love bug. We could gobble him up with kisses. And the most precious thing? He gives just as many kisses back! :)
Riding the nose.
Later in the day we rode our bikes to a park where we all played ball. Kyle was way into his real baseball. We know he can tell a difference from all those "fake" ones at home and was instantly attached!
Winding up...
