We heard the heartbeat!

Surprisingly, every time we've gone to a doctor's appointment, we've been given an ultrasound. Today, we were excited to not only see our bambino, but to hear its heartbeat, too. Rudy's expression was so sweet as the sound registered for what it was. I'd say he is in love! :)
All too quickly, the monitor was turned off and we were sent on our way.

Baby's 2nd Picture!

We got to see our little one again, just four days after our first ultrasound. This will be our last for a while, so we soaked it all in. We have a new due date: August 10th! Here is our little Shmu on the left with a yolk sac bubble to its right. When I showed my mom and sister, I told them I thought it looked like a gummy bear. My mom thought it looked like a hippo, and my sister thought it looked like a dragon. So much for showing any reverence for my little human embryo! :)
In case you'd like a more clear picture of what you're looking at, here's an embryo at 7w4d.

How we told our parents...

My mother in law, who is a flight attendant, was in LA for an extended layover on Christmas Eve. We waited to tell our families until both our moms could be told in person, together. It was really fun. We knew from looking on a website that our baby was the size of a blueberry, so we wrapped up a single blueberry in a little jewelry box for each mom to open. After having Christmas Eve dinner, we casually told Rudy's mom, Gina, that we wanted her to open a gift. And because they were the same, I told my mom she could open hers too. They lifted the lid to their present at the same time and didn't know what to say when they saw the blueberry. After waiting just a few seconds, I said, "That's the size of your grandchild right now!" It took not even a second for screaming and clapping and hugging to fill the kitchen. It was well worth waiting to tell them for that very moment! Here they are with their little blueberries...

Baby's First Picture!

At our first doctor's appointment, we got to see our little one. It's heart was huge and beating at a healthy 175 bpm. It took our breath away. We also found out that we were a week farther along (7weeks)! This was good news to me, as that meant I was one week farther along in "finally" feeling better! Morning (or all day and night) sickness is really keeping me down and I'm thankful for winter break from school! Seeing the baby made me forget all the discomfort however, and I could have stared at that monitor all day long!

Yeah, you read it right... we're having a baby!!!

Can you believe it? We're...

We were both pretty shocked! Here's how the day went as recorded on December 6, 2008:

Today, while riding around on our beach cruisers in search of garage sales, I began to wonder whether or not I should test. I didn't think there would be any chance of me being pregnant, but I was late getting my period and I decided it was worth a shot. So, I used a regular test and lo and behold, there were two lines! I couldn't believe it. I was in total shock, thinking somehow the test was wrong. I went on some shopping errands and kept having to remind myself that yes, there were TWO lines!! I decided to trust the test and stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up some hotdog buns (for my reveal to Rudy). Once I got home, I used a digital pg test and it said: PREGNANT!! Finally convinced, but in somewhat of a daze, I quickly whipped out some scavenger hunt cards and set up the sequence for Rudy to follow. He was trying to fix a computer problem and I was dying for him to be done and start on my scavenger hunt! I finally convinced him to set it aside and come see what I had for him. He got excited as he went from card to card and then asked, "Is there a prize for me at the end?" The last clue he read said, "Another source of heat for our home." He went to the oven and found a hotdog bun with a pg test wrapped up in it with a little bow. He knew instantly and just looked at me with wide eyes. I shook my head, yes, and began to cry!

We are still trying to process this shock and are soooo very excited! I can't believe it's real!

We've got a little bun in the oven!

Guess it's time to start our family blog!

It's official. I figure now we'd better start blogging since we have so many out of state family members. I hope this will be a good way to chronicle our adventures and keep family in the loop.

Welcome to the Martin Family blog!
